Named Persons Workshop

Edinburgh Carers Council are running a session for carers and family members around the role of Named Person, the Mental Health Officer and Carer Advocacy.

The aim of the session is to provide information and an opportunity for people to discuss their experiences of acting as a Named Person for someone.

There will be input from Dolores Nelson and Callum Hendry, Mental Health Officers and Andrea Ridley, Carer Advocacy Worker.

Mental Health in the Workplace

This one day course aims to provide participants with a broad awareness and understanding of mental health issues in the workplace.

Learning outcomes:
Participants with have the opportunity to:

  • Learn to identify workplace influences on mental health and well being
  • Learn to identify signs and symptoms of stress
  • Gain awareness of their legal responsibilities in relation to mental health in the workplace
  • Gain awareness of common mental health problems
  • Gain an understanding of ways to support staff with mental health problems

WRAP Workshops

These consist of a series of three half day sessions. Participants are expected to commit to undertaking all 3 sessions.

Aims

  • To create an understanding of how WRAP can help you manage your own wellness
  • To explore the process of what is involved in creating your own WRAP
  • To start the process of creating your own WRAP

Learning Outcomes
Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Have a greater understanding of the recovery pathways
  • Understand how WRAP can help you manage your own wellness
  • Have a shared understanding of the ethics and values underpinning WRAP
  • Understand the simple format that makes up the overview of WRAP
  • Begin the process of creating your own WRAP

Prospective Participants

  • Open to all
  • These workshops are very much about the individual developing their own WRAP. They do not enable you to facilitate groups to develop WRAP
  • When you have a working WRAP, you are then thought to be in a position to work one-to-one with people to support them going through the process

All sessions run from 9:30 – 12:30 followed by a buffet lunch.

Self Esteem Workshop

The Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living is running a series of training for Disabled People who would like to develop their confidence skills within their lives.

The course ‘I’m OK" consists of 2 half-day workshops and offers the chance to:

  • Find out what self esteem is and what it means to you
  • Explore how you feel
  • Identify what makes you feel good

This course has been designed to be accessible to disabled people. An experienced disabled trainer will deliver the course, and a personal assistant is on hand during the sessions. LCIL can also offer some assistance with transport.

Green Healthcare Seminar - Branching Out

This a free seminar showcasing how green healthcare can promote mental wellbeing and recovery and will look at a number of different green healthcare options, as well as supporting research and the practicalities of delivery. There will be a keynote address from Anne Hawkins, Director of the Mental Health Partnership in Glasgow.

The seminar has been organised by Branching Out, a partnership project between Forestry Commission Scotland and Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board, which uses woodland and green spaces on referral for adults who use mental health services.

Bipolar Scotland AGM & Annual Conference

The main theme of the conference will be “Celebrating Self-Help”. Will Lyons, a Journalist with the Wall Street Journal, will be one of our keynote speakers.

Will wrote an article for the Scotsman and has been interviewed by Fergal Keane on BBC Radio 4, on his experience of caring for his wife who has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Also, Aileen Bell and Alan Douglas from Bipolar Scotland will be giving a talk on self-help groups – the story so far.


The afternoon session will include workshops on Welfare Reform – Which Way Now? Self-Help groups – do they work? and participative workshops with Universal Comedy and Tai Chi.

Please note that Bipolar Scotland will be able to meet the cost of travel expenses for those in severe financial hardship.
