Peer Support Report
- Purpose of report
The purpose of this report is to update members of Lothian Recovery Network on activities, progress and opinions around peer support in Lothian. Work in Lothian is taking place within a supportive national context, therefore some recent developments at Scottish and UK level are also covered.
- What is peer support?
Among the many ways of describing peer support, Sherry Mead’s
definition is useful in focusing on the values base: “Peer Support is a system of giving and receiving help founded on key principles of respect, shared responsibility and mutual agreement of what is helpful.”
Mead reminds us that it “is about understanding another’s situation
empathically through the shared experience of emotional and
psychological pain”
